My coaching philosophy

My coaching is based on the teaching methods outlined in the book Starting Strength: Basic Barbell Training, 3rd Edition. I love barbells as a training implement because they are infinitely scalable — no matter how “weak” you may be at first, we can find a place to start, and through incremental increases (following principles of progressive overload), anyone can achieve measurable improvement in a relatively short time-frame.

I begin everyone on four main barbell lifts: the squat, the overhead press, the bench press, and the deadlift. Over time, you’ll learn new exercise variations (depending on your goals), but the focus is on simplicity, technique, and hard work. Exercise selection is based on trainability (can you measurably improve/get stronger) and efficiency (can we get the best “bang for your buck,” so to speak) over the long term, rather than on what will get you hot and sweaty today.

I believe that everyone can be strong as hell, in their current body size/shape. I practice allyship in all forms, and am committed to making Paladino Strength a completely “come as you are” space. Gyms can be extremely intimidating and potentially dangerous for some people–if you have been made to feel unsafe or unwelcome in the fitness world because of your race, gender identity and/or expression, sexuality, age, ability, or size, know that you are exactly the kind of person I want to work with!

I value authenticity, work ethic, and doing things that are scary. I also believe in meeting people where they are. Whatever is going on in your life, whatever your goals are, we can work together to find a program that works for you.
